Juneteenth Celebration at Roseland: Saturday, June 15, 2019, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Freedom and history will be the themes at an event at Roseland Plantation on June 15, 2019, with Juneteenth festivities and a reunion of local families.

June 19 of each year is the date now recognized by most American states, including Texas, as a day to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday remembers the announcement, on June 19, 1965, in Galveston, Texas, by federal authorities, of the freedom of all persons at the end of the Civil War. (The Emancipation Proclamation had declared all slaves in seceded states to be free on January 1, 1863, but the proclamation was widely unrecognized.)

The Roseland event on June 15 will focus on a reunion of descendants of slaves of the plantation and other local families in the surrounding Redland area. It will also be a classic celebration of Juneteenth, by now a time-honored tradition in Texas and elsewhere.
